I LOVE upcycles, how about you? After the vanity table project (see vanity table tutorial here), I wanted to organize my most frequently used makeup and accessories in a way that would also make them look nice on display. Using various items I had around the house, I completed 5 upcycles to make it happen. Let me share them with you...
1) Tiered serving tray
I had a lovely silver tiered serving tray that was sitting in a cupboard, unused the majority of the time. I decided to pull it out and use it to hold 3 levels of items on the vanity table. I think it looks really pretty, and I enjoy looking at it every day rather than it wasting away in the kitchen cupboard.
2) Votive holder
Under the sink in the master bathroom, I store some candles and accessories for occasional candlelit baths. I decided to explore my options under there and found a votive/deep tea light holder that hadn't been used in a while. If I couldn't use it for anything, the next stop was going to be in a spring garage sale, but I thought it might make a nice dish for holding smaller makeup items. I'd say it was a good call! I think it looks really cute!
I don't know about you, but I have a hard time throwing away glass jars and bottles. I don't like having a bunch of stuff filling up my house either, so I find ways to use them. I had a glass jar from a candle that was burned away and decided to make it into a jar for makeup brush storage. I also use another one of these to hold various items like eyeliner, mascara, etc.
There is more to this one...I didn't have any of those pretty glass beads you usually see as jar filler, but I did have a decent amount of Mardi Gras beads from various birthday and holiday parties over the years. If you would like to see how I used the Mardi Gras beads as a filler, you can find the full tutorial here.
4) 3 wick candle holder
Under the same bathroom sink that I got the votive from, was the matching 3 wick candle holder. Again, this candle holder was only a couple months away from being put in a garage sale. It was given a new purpose and now sits on the vanity as a tray for holding various items.
5) Wet wipes container
Lastly, this one isn't for display, but works nicely in the drawer of the vanity...an empty Wet Ones case into a hair tie, bobby pin, and accessory container. It's a nice way to recycle AND upcycle those plastic containers.
I prefer to wash and sanitize anything that was once used in a bathroom, just for my own peace of mind (always a nurse).
These containers come in handy for everything! I use them to organize my kids' homework supplies (which will come in a later post), I use them for medicine boxes when travelling, craft supply storage, you name it. You can't really go wrong with these versatile little containers!
There you have it! 5 easy upcycles using various items around the house to store cosmetics and accessories. I hope you found this list helpful. If you have any ideas you'd like to share, I'd love to hear them!
Until next time...create away!
